November 23, 2020

The current topic of discussion for the improvement of performance in food safety across supply chains, is culture. There are new clauses in the latest accreditation standards, BRC V8 for example, attempting to close the gap in understanding and improving the delivery of safer foods from supply chains. The conclusion, based on 40 years’ experience working in food manufacturing (both in the manufacture and the governance of safe foods), is that to compel businesses to over-focus in one area – behaviour – while they may already be failing in other areas, or indeed have a business strategy that does not even consider food safety, is at best pointless, and at worst only going to increase risk in the supply chain. There are 4 key areas of balance that will deliver predictable and repeatable outcomes, and the culture of behaviour is one of them.
